After thirteen years of service in may of 1836 his captain sent him to Cape of Good Hope for two years to recover from a severe case of Malaria. Harris launched a remarkable five month hunting trek north beyond the Limpopo River which is now Zimbabwe. A gifted artist he left us with views of the land and game of the time. Harris use to carry his drawing tools during his hunting expeditions and his paintings were developed from sketches made on the spot in the wild. A dedicated naturalist he provided invaluable museum specimens crowned by the rarest of all, a completely new species of large antelope. He went on to produce the hugely popular book "The Wild SPorts of Southern Africa" which was re-issued in London in 1839 from the original version published from Bombay the previous year. Harris led a mission from the government of Bombay to the Ethiopian King, Sahela Selassie of Shoa (Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa) the success of which resulted in his being knighted.
