You are looking at an antique St. Louis (circa 1845-1860) encased double overlay upright bouquet paperweight. This is one of the most difficult of paperweights to have been made succesfully. After the initial bouquet is made and encased with clear glass, it is then encased in a layer of white glass. When that layer has cooled, printies (windows) are cut in the layer of white so that the bouquet design can be seen inside. The weight is then heated again and encased in a layer of blue over the white and again the printies are cut to shows the edges of the layer of white underneath the blue and again allowing visibility of the bouquet. After that has been done, the artist then daringly heats the paperweight yet again and encases the entire weight in a layer of clear glass. It is amazing that the glass paperweight could survive the reheating and encasing over and over again and still survive without shattering. It is even more amazing that this was created in the 1800's when the glass artists did not have thermostatically controlled annealing ovens to help maintain temperatures. The color in this weight is bright and vibrant and the bouquet is one of the better bouquets that I have seen inside of these weights.
