Thereare three sets of hallmarks on this delightful table bell, all identifying the silversmith George Fox, London, 1904. One is on the bell ‘waist’, another on the clapper and, extraordinarily, another on the small S-hook which attaches the clapper to the body of the bell (Photo 2). The shoulder is beautifully engraved - see photograph – and the whole measures 16½ cm high; 8½ cm diameter (just under 3½ by 6½ inches) and weighs a very solid 265g. The bell handle is finely carved – seemingly in a grain-free fruitwood, but I’m really not sure. Whatever, there’s an old, small repair where it joins the bell (see photograph) and, although the handle is well secured, there’s also been a slight wobble from side to side for as long as I can remember (over 20 years). See photo 3. The bell tone is sweet and true.
