DESCRIPTION: A superb quality antique, solid sterling silver, large hip/spirit flask by James Dixon and Sons. This large flask has a full set of English hallmarks for Sheffield, 1918. The flask has a detachable sterling silver drinking cup, is in excellent collection, and would make a fabulous gift or addition to any collection DETAILS: This is an excellent early 20th century solid sterling silver hip flask with a detachable solid sterling silver cup. All parts of this flask are solid sterling silver (no silver plate or glass liner). The lid is an attached bayonet style with a cork seal and an attractive and durable knurled design (see photos). The flask has a nice slim, plain, curved design to fit in a hip pocket. The detachable cup is gold plated on the interior, which is a sign of a quality piece. It has a nice smooth finish to the silver and feels great in the hand. T is a small and very discrete name engraving (" Finn "presumably the name of the original owner) on the back of the cup (see photo). The flask and cup are made of a good gauge of silver and the engraving is fairly shallow and could be removed if desired. This is a large flask measuring 6 inches (151mm) long , 4 inches (100mm) wide and 3/4 inches (18mm) deep. It has a capacity of 8 fluid ounces. The flask weighs almost 10 troy ounces. HALLMARKS: The flask is fully hallmarked English sterling silver. The marks are as follows: "Crown" stamp for the Sheffield assay office, the "Lion Passant" stamp denoting English solid sterling silver, and the date stamp "a" for 1918. It also bears the makers mark "J.D & S" for the silversmiths James Dixon and Sons. It is fully hallmarked, including the makers mark, on the front of the flask and on the base of the cup. In addition, the lid and both arms of the hinge are stamped with the "Lion Passant" stamp. CONDITION: The flask is in excellent condition with no cracks, splits, holes or leaks. T is no evidence of any repairs or restoration. T are no bad knocks or dents. T is a very shallow bruise (can only be seen at certain angles) to the front right of the flask and a few minuscule pinhead dents on the rear (again hardly noticeable). The surface has a nice antique patina with a few light scratches, as would be expected. Please note that this is a genuine antique and after 90 years is obviously not like new - it has a patina that only develops with time and use. The hinged bayonet lid works perfectly and seals tightly. The cork seal has been replaced and is absolutely watertight, making this flask ready to use. PAYMENT: PayPal is preferred. I will also accept bank drafts. Item will be shipped as soon as payment is received. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
