You are bidding on an antique Church Holy Vessel from the estate of Archbishop Ismaele Puirredon, of Puno , Peru who died in 1916. We have posted his 1895 studio photograph which happened to be in one of the boxes containing items from this vast estate collection. All has been consigned to us for auction to raise funds for one of the convents we work with in Peru . Each item will be offered individually to the highest bidder. We do not know the number of antique items we will have from this collection, as they are still arriving in US Customs in Miami . This rare church censor is one of two, (and the last), that has come down to us from this estate. The first one that has already been auction(EBay item 320061067234), had the rare Guatemala-Chiapas "crown" Hallmark found on its base and listed in the Classic book on silver , Spanish Colonial Silver; by Leona Davis Boylan, page 196. The one you are bidding on , (although we are certain it was made in the same period and in the same silverworks), has had its hallmark removed. We suspect this was as a result of a repair to the base that was made many years ago. We can faintly see the tips of the crown hallmark on its base, but we can not say that the hallmark is identifyable. The thurible you are bidding on below is the smaller of the two and it weighs 2 pounds of solid sterling silver,(we had the piece acid tested). It is 8.5 inches tall from its base to the ring on its top. The diameter of the lower cup w the incense is placed is 5 inches wide. The 3 chains that hold the thurible are 20 inches and very heavy . We suspect that the chains and the rings may have been replaced at some point during the censers 200+ year history. These repairs were common on censors and it does not affect the collector value when properly done; as they were in this case. Good luck bidding!
