The silk shawl known as “manton de manila” is Chinese in origin, and it was first imported to Spain via the Philippines, getting its name from Manila, the capital of the Philippines. While the original shawls were embroidered with pagodas and dragons, very soon they were adapted to the Spanish taste, and the embroidery displayed birds and flowers. While a favorite of flamenco dancers, the “manton de manila” became part of the folk costume of women in Madrid in the 19 th century. Then, and during some festivals today, women from Madrid would wear long dresses that were tight in the hips but flare out at the legs, with a scarf on the head, and a fringed shawl around the shoulders, and would adorn themselves with carnations. I am offering for sale a gorgeous, silk “manton de manila” that was originally purchased by my great grandmother in Spain and it has been in the family ever since, passed on to the eldest daughter in each generation. That makes it over 200 years old. It is made of a double layer of silk, hand embroidered in silk also, measuring around 65 inches (fringe not included). The fringe around the shawl is “encaje de bolillos” (bobbin lace), also in silk and hand made, about 20 inches long . See pics 1, 2,and 3.
