Antique Spencer Browning Rust Sextant. These were made in London from 1724 - 1840 when the name was changed to Spencer Browning after the death of Ebanezer Rust. Spencer Browning continued to make Sextants under the name Spencer Browning from 1840 - 1870. The sextant is clearly marked Spencer Browning Rust - London. A faded note in the box tells of a man who owned the sextant who was harbor master in both Honolulu and San Francisco. I have never sold one of these before so am not sure what to call things or what all should be with it, but in looking at pictures of Sextants My best guess would be that it is a Double Frame Sextant. The length of the Sextant is 9 ½ inches. The width of the frame at the arc is 10 inches. In the box it weights just under 8 pounds. It comes with 2 tubes which are called sighting tubes and an extra scope with a lens. I don't know much about lenses but can tell you that they have glass in them that is not broken. The Sextant itself is badly tarnished and I did not attempt to remove any of it. Resoring this Sextant with a good cleaning and polishing will be a labor of love for the buyer and afterwards he will have an instrument to be truly proud of. T is a large crack in the bottom of the Mahogany box which is shown in my last image. T are also two small cracks in the top of the box. T was originally a lock and key to the box, but the metal lock and key are missing and t is just the hole in the wood. This item will be carefully packaged and shipped to the buyers address. Item is sold in 'as found' Condition and must be paid for by PayPal. Winning bidder to contact seller within three days of the close of auction with shipping address and how auction will be paid for.
