Antique US Navy Sextant Sextant by Stackpole & Brothers Serial Number 024 Presented is a historic piece of American maritime history. An early sextant made by Stackpole & Brother, Serial Number 024, likely around 1851 -53. It is in remarkably good condition. It comes in a wood case with the inside card reading John Bliss & Co. 123 Front Street, between Wall & Pine New York Give Special Attention To Repairing Nautical Instruments of all kinds. Employing only the most competent workman for that branch.The makers of this sextant, William and Robert Stackpole, boasted that they had "made nearly all the sextants required by our Navy." The Stackpole brothers were Irish immigrants who started their business in New York in 1851--a time when Americans were beginning to produce mathematical instruments comparable to those made in Europe. Serial numbers suggest that the Stackpoles had, indeed, manufactured more than 2,000 sextants as well as other instruments for surveying and nautical use and this one happens to be number 24. The sextant measures about 9" long and wide.The mirror has spotting on it but is still ok. There are four square lenses and three circular lenses all in very good shape with no hazeing or spotting. The arm slides very smooth and the magnified eye hole is very clear. The name Stackpole & Brother is very clear however the numbers are worn and some are not readable but most measurements and numbers are readable. On the bottom of the wooden handle is etched SDUSD H73941 and just above it on the metal is etched SDVS. I hope you can see how nice this instrument is in the pictures taken.
