The lid of this wonderful box is hand engraved in a sinuous pattern with a crisscross background. The central cartouche is monogrammed with an ornate "TM", to the best of our ability to read it. The underside repeats the swirling of the lid, and the sides are also engraved, now mostly worn away, leaving only the pinprick borders. The lid has a slight overhang, typical of most true snuff boxes. The interior is gilt, with a maker's mark "IS" and a Birmingham hallmark. The date mark is unclear. To the interior of the lid is an oval with the sovereign's head, the maker's mark "IS"and a leopard in a rounded shield. To the bottom interior of the box is the Birmingham symbol, also in a rounded shield, followed by two letters "S" and "V" in a shield shape with a straight top. These date letters imply 1816 and/or 1819, although they are also a match for 1790 and 1793. PLEASE SEE PHOTOS. Dimensions: 2" X 1 ¼" X ½" deep. In very good antique condition, considering age and use. Clasp and hinge are excellent. Slight bending to the lip. Wear to the engraving, and small denting to the underside and one corner. A wonderful soft patina. We are listing a number of boxes, in particular snuff boxes - both silver and wood - this week. Please seee "Seller's Other Items".
