ANTIQUE Sterling OYSTER SERVER Towle Silversmiths Oyster servers are uncommon and collected for their unique shape and function. This particular one is a solid twisted handle which flares out to a flat server on one end. I purchased this in an Estate Sale and it dates back to 1880's. It appears to have been forged from a solid piece of sterling and it is quite substantial. I had difficulty reading the hallmark on the back but found the pattern in one of my books - I believe it is "Number 128 aka No. 28" - a pattern introduced by Towle in 1880. It was not a full line of flatware but specialty serving pieces. If anyone out t can shed some light or provide any information I would be most appreciative. The Oyster server measures 10 1/2" in length. The serving portion resembles the shape of an oyster shell and it is 5" long and 2 1/2" wide. T is a lovely old style monogram "S" in the bowl. The markings are at the base of the bowl and very hard to make out. T is a 2, part of the word sterling, makers mark and 3. If you run your finger along the edge you may feel some minute fleabites that are not visible unless you are really scrutinizing it - like I do before listing.
