DESCRIPTION: A superb quality antique, solid sterling silver, glass, and snake skin hip/spirit flask by Gorham. This large flask is fully marked with the Gorham company marks for Sterling Silver and date mark for 1895. The flask has a detachable sterling silver drinking cup, is in excellent condition, and would make a fabulous gift or addition to any collection. A fantastic, quality, Victorian hip flask from one of Americas best makers! You will not be disappointed. DETAILS: This is an excellent early late 19th century hip flask from one of America's premier silversmiths. This was make when the Gorham company was at its very best, everything about this flask exudes quality. The flask with a detachable solid sterling silver cup and a sterling silver neck and cap. The remainder of the flask is covered in reptile skin (either snake or lizard). The lid is an attached bayonet style with a cork seal in an attractively plain design (see photos). The interior of the lid and the mouthpiece are gold plated (see photos). The detachable cup is gold plated on the interior, which is a sign of a quality piece. The gold plating prevents the silver from imparting any metallic taste to the beverage. The flask feels great in the hand. The flask has been monogrammed (GFF) on the front of the cup (see photo). The cup is made of a really good gauge of silver and the engraving is fairly shallow and could be removed if desired. This is a large flask measuring 5.5 inches (140mm) long , 2.85 inches (73mm) wide and 1.5 inches (37mm) deep. It has a capacity of 3/8 of a pint. HALLMARKS: All silver parts of this flask are hallmarked sterling silver. The flask is marked on the base of the cup with the Gorham company marks of 'Lion', 'Anchor' and 'G' and 'STERLING' T is also serial number 'S650' below which is a 'crescent moon'. This is Gorham's date mark for the year 1895. The silver top of the flask is also marked 'Sterling'. The interior of the cup, and the mouth piece of the flask are both stamped '46'. CONDITION: Overall the flask is in excellent condition. The glass is in absolutely perfect condition. T are no cracks, chips or scratches. The reptile skin jacket is also in remarkable condition for its age. T are no rips, tears or serious scuffs. T has been some loss of material from overlapping sections but nothing significant. Considering that this flask is 113 years old the condition of the skin is brilliant. The silver cup is in fantastic condition too. T is one tiny pinhead dent to the rear and some wear to the surface of the front. The dent is hardly noticeable (see photos) and the wear could easily be polished out. The surface has a nice antique patina with a few light scratches, as would be expected. T one dent to the lid (see photo). The hinged bayonet lid works perfectly and seals tightly. The cork seal is still watertight. Please note that this is a genuine antique and after 113 years is obviously not like new - it has a patina that only develops with time and use. It is very unusual to find a flask of this type and age is such good condition. . PAYMENT: PayPal is preferred. I will also accept bank drafts. Item will be shipped as soon as payment is received. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
