An ex-voto is a Catholic votive offering to a saint or divinity, given in fulfillment of a vow or in gratitude. They are placed in a church or chapel w the worshipper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks; as is the case with this solid silver one below, placed at the feet of a Saint Francis statue in Peru. St. Francis is the Catholic Patron Saint of animals, birds and zoos; for years children and adults have left these hand made sterling silver pieces in gratitude of a pet getting well, being found or received as a gift. They are very rare. The antique Ex Voto in the pictures below is one of a collection on consignment for auction from a convent that was going to sell them for the silver value, in order to help with their rebuilding after the earthquake that hit Peru several weeks ago. We will provide the winning bidder with the provenance of each Ex Voto and a thank-you letter from the convent, upon request. This Ex Voto has tested positive for sterling quality silver, using acid testing. It weighs 28.3 grams, and it is 3.25 tall by 2.75 inches wide. Bidders should be aware that we only have one of each, and that similar or like pieces have already been melted down through the years for their silver value, as is the practice in churches in Peru . You should also be aware that we are guessing at what the bread of dog may be, as read more
