RARE STIEGEL FLIP GLASS MUGS CIRCA 1795 is the thing - I believe that, after all the research done, these two mugs are the real thing. Apparently they can only be termed Stiegel type. I will explain why I think they are original Stiegel: 1. The mugs were bought at an estate auction with three other pieces of American Glass - Boston and Sanwich Glass Co. creamer and sugar, 2 pieces of New England Glass Company which you can see as they are currently up for auction. All these 3 items came identified with descriptions, either from books, or on paper. The descriptions proved correct. 2. These mugs came with two pieces of identification - a card from Shreve, Crump and Low Boston, on which is written Antique American flip glass , along with a written piece of paper saying "See Hunter's Stiegel Glass Illustration 122". Hunter is the author of "Baron Stiegel and American Glass published December 1913." 3. I have not been able to get a copy of the book, but doing research I was able to get a copy of Page 260 showing enameled, etched, and plain glass by Baron Stiegel. I have also included a picture from a Book called Glass which also shows the Stiegel mugs. 4. I contacted the Historic Manheim Preservation Foundation and sent them pictures of the mugs to ask if they would give me an opinion, I have a copy of the email which I could send to anyone interested. They claim that it is difficult to identify Henry William Stiegel copper wheel engraved clear glass until shards showing designs or design documentation is discovered. With regards to this, a few months ago, probably about 6months, 2 Mint condition Stiegel mugs were sold for $2000. and the pattern is identical to the small mug's bird pattern. What I do have: 1. Two engraved clear glass mugs, one with an etched bird, and the larger one with a duck on top of flowers. 2. The mugs are unbelievably fragile, I do not dare even to wash them 2. Both mugs are damaged - the small one has cracks around the handle and up to the top edge of the mug - the crack is 3" long the large mug is also severly cracked around the handle - t is an entire section around the handle w the crack has travelled. I do not know enough about American glass nor its history. But I believe that these 2 mugs should be kept as an example of early American glass manufacturing as it appears that t so few examples left. That is why they are up for auction, I think they should go back to the States to some astute collector who recognizes, treasures and values this type of glass. I have been as honest as possible in the description, but I will again emphasis that they are damaged, and I believe that they may be real Stiegal glass and tfore have historial value even in their condition. If anyone knows more please contact me.
