ATTENTION: Please read this description carefully and email me with any questions before bidding. Remember to check this listing during the auction for any addendums I may add. This very fine antique paperweight carries a sulphide of Lajos Kossuth, hero of " The Hungarian Liberation Fight of 1848", and may have been produced to celebrate his visit to America in 1851.Aside from wear to the top surface (which can be polished)it is in surprisingly good condition with only a few tiny surface nicks around the perimeter surface and a tiny shallowflake to the foot edge. It has none of the circular impact fractures which are so common to 19 th century glass weights and which are frequently too deep to polish out.T is a smooth shallow crease in the side which was caused when the sulphide was sandwiched between two heavy layers of glassand these layers w not entirely melded together. This slight indentationruns approx. ¼ of the way around the perimeter and I mention it for the sake of accuracy.Concave polished pontil with flattened foot rim.2 & 5/8" diameter by 1 & ½" thick. The identification and dating of Antiques and Decorative Arts is at times a more or less subjective endeavor. For a variety of reasons, one 'expert's' results can differ from another's. My descriptions are based on my researches and experience. The time to question these, is before bidding, not after. I go to great lengths to be as accurate as possible and to provide enough photographs to allow the buyer to exercise their own judgment. However, I cannot be responsible for differing opinions, when brought into play after the close of an auction. If you remain uneasy about an item I am listing, even after contacting me, the decision to bid will be your responsibility. I have regretfully had to 'draw this line', due to a rash of disreputable deadbeat buyers, who have attempted to back out of their purchase commitment, by interposing the 'opinion' of a non-substantiated third party. This despite the fact that the object was accurately represented and well photographed.PLEASE NOTE: Unless it's absolutely unnecessary, ALL of my items are shipped double boxed, with sufficient buffer/packing room all around in each box. I am a meticulous packer, taking time and trouble to try and insure that the item arrives undamaged. I do not charge for materials or handling. However, my scales is not calibrated to the Post Office scales, and the difference of an ounce can alter the cost of shipping by $1 or more, up or down (the price changes at the first ounce over the even pound weight). I do my best to be as accurate as possible when calculating shipping, but cannot be responsible for any discrepancy between my scales and that of the Post Office.Shipping & Ins. by USPS at buyer's expense. IMPORTANT: The only way to insure rapid shipping is with a POSTAL MONEY ORDER which I can cash & ship same day. I DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL. All other kinds of money orders (Bank etc) & personal checks, TAKE 5 BUSINESS DAYS TO CLEAR (from weekday deposit). Please e.mail your shipping info w. Zip after auction so I can calculate shipping charges. INTERNTNL BUYERS: I accept Western Union money wire in US$, a Bank Check or Bank M.O in US$, a Bank transfer of funds (w $20 charge), Traveler's Checks in US$ or if available, an International Postal Money Order.
