ANTIQUE TAPESTRY Venice, Italy Promenade/Canal NICE !!

Vintage Antique Tapestry Venice You are bidding on one antique tapestry with a Venice, Italy promenade and canal motif. An "Antiques Roadshow" appraiser told me (on July 14, 2007, at the San Antonio, TX show) that it was in good condition for its age and was most likely machine woven in France, Belgium, or Germany in the 1920's. The size is 53-1/2" x 18". I am no expert on tapestries but will try to describe it the best I can, answer any questions to the best of my ability, and will supply additional photos if needed. The tapestry depicts what appears to have been a gathering place on a promenade along a canal. People in period dress are seen conversing or greeting each other while walking their dogs. Gondolas and sailboats are in the canal with a skyline of buildings in the background. The predominate colors are beige, tan, pinks, blues, and sage greens. T are some small tack holes along the edge of the tapestry, mainly at the corners, w it must have been hung at one time. This piece has tan fabric (cotton?) sewn onto the perimeter of the back side. T is a 2" wide strip at the top, rear that forms a pocket w a rod may have once been inserted. T is a 1/2" width strip of this same fabric along the rear sides and rear bottom. The material for the rod pocket has come unsewn a little (less than 2") at one upper corner (only affects the back side and could easily be re-sewn by hand). Since the fabric covers some the edges of the back side, I can not tell if it is marked underneath as to country of origin. This tapestry was one of several obtained from my Great Aunt's estate sale in Beaumont, TX back in the late 1960's. It has been folded and in storage since that time. I'm sure it could use a proper cleaning. We're trying to pare down and make space. Since I'm no expert on these items, I must sell it as is. Please ask questions ahead of time. I will be listing several more tapestries from this same time period over the next couple of months and hope you'll come back to see them.
