A great pair of antique tattoo parlor signs; these venerable beauties look to me to date to the early 20th century, around WW1 up until the 1930's, judging by the style of art and the fact that sample designs were displayed this way as opposed to the more modern method of transfers or decals in a book form. The art is great and very 'campy', these 30 inch signs will display beautifully hanging on a wall in most any room but the Army & Navy themes would definitely look great in a den or gun room. There is no apparent provision for hanging, no hooks or holes - so I'm inclined to think that these were most likely displayed on a counter top so they could be handled and examined by the potential ink-ee. They are well carved in deep relief and are clearly and right and left - they are very well painted and show minor wear and very slight paint loss. They seem to be overpainted with varnish that is now darkening. Harkening from the days when tattoos were the mark of the 'underworld, military and the less savory members of society, these great old signs need to be proudly displayed as socially most acceptable and quite the norm - you can show your 'colors' for $995 OR BEST OFFER (for the pair)!!!
