Antique Thoune Swiss Majolica Pottery Charger Floral 1881 Schoch-Laderach Signed Thoune Pottery Swiss Majolica Plate/Charger with Floral Decoration by Schoch-Laderach This is one of a pair of Thoune Pottery Swiss Majolica Chargers currently listed on eBay. This one I will refer to with Floral Decoration and the other charger listed I will refer to with Floral and Fruit Decoration. There are three distinctive phases in the development of this style of Swiss pottery dating back the the early 1800s. The first phase, called "Old Heimberg" was richly decorated pottery for daily use dates from 1800-1860. The second phase, referred to as "Paris Ware" named after the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878 dates from 1860-1880. It is similar to the last phase, decorated with flowers on a dark background but without the popular Edelweiss. Finally, the third phase, referred to as Thoune Pottery and Swiss Majolica. It dates from 1878-1914. This charger is from the last and most popular of the phases of Thoune Pottery, Swiss Majolica. It is a classic example of Thoune Swiss Majolica, earthenware covered with a brown slip then painted with geometrical patterns and Edelweiss floral motifs in brilliant colors enamel like raised finish.
