ITEM: Antique plumberâe(tm)s turnpin plus plumb bob! I have quite a collection of turnpins, but I have never seen one like this combination!A turnpin (or pipetap) was used for shaping lead pipe. It would provide a bevel at the end for slip ring connections or simply to straighten the end so as to have a proper fit before one would wipe the joint with a molten wiping lead. A plumber would tap this solid wooden tool gently into the end of a pipe to flare it out a bit . Then a second piece of pipe could be inserted into it and then the two joined (soldered) together. They were used until the 1920s in the US and Britain. This beauty we offer is from Scotland! It has been well-used and has all the expected chips and dents and hammer marks one would expect. Additionally, a clever plumber has securely attached a metal eyelet to the top end so he could use it to hang a plumb line as well. A fine, rare addition to any collection of vintage wooden tools, it is 3.5âe tall and appears to be made of solid lignum vitae.
