For sale is an original Tramp Art Frame possibly made between the late 1860' up to the depression era. Tramp art is made by stacking layers of handcut pieces of tobacco or shipping crate wood in a decorative pattern. The reason cigar boxes were used was because America's first tax laws were levied on tobacco and they needed to fund the Civil War. The law mandated that all cigars were to be sold in wooden boxes of the same size. Once the cigars were sold the boxes could not be reused to pack new cigars, hence a surplus of boxes. It is thought that only Hobo's or Tramps made these handcrafted items during the depression, but further research shows that this was an art that even families took up. The end results were always unique and beautiful items. This frame actually has a pattern name which is called " Crown of Thorns ". It's named that because of the thorny type pegs that have been intertwined to make a layered 3 dimensional frame. The frame measure 20" X 28" from end to end and 15" X 20.5" on the inside. The frame is in pretty good condition considering it's age and frailty. T are a few pegs missing, some rough edges and some paint on a couple of tips (last picture). All in all it's a very beautiful piece of Americana hand made art! We specialize in American Ceramics and Flow Blue China and guarantee our merchandise 100% .
