Antique Trippensee Planetarium Orrery with its original wooden storage box. This orrery planetarium features a 4" brass sp Sun with Mercury orbiting it. The Earth orbited by the Moon is attached to the Sun by a wooden arm. The earth has a complete map printed on it naming the countries and continents. T is a maker's plate on the arm as well as a working compass. The brass plate reads "The Trippensee Planetarium/Pat. U.S. Mar 10 08, Canada July 21, 08/ The Trippensee MFG. CO./ Detroit Mich U.S.A." The base of the planetarium is also made of brass and marked with the months, astrological signs and the seasons. The entire planetarium is in working condition with all it's original gears and chains (but one which is a workable and suitable replacement). Overall the planetarium is 20" long and stands 14" tall. The brass has a patina from age but no blemishes. Some very small amount of paint on the dark side of Moon and Mercury has flaked off but the sps are still whole and in good condition. The map that covers the earth is in very good condition with no signs of seperation or peeling. The Orrery is complete with it's original wooden box. The box measures 15-1/2" long by 21" wide and is 8-1/4" deep. T is the original decorative brass handle on one end for carrying. The lid sides into place, and once had a latch that secured it but only part of the latch is still intact. The interior of the box is designed to hold the orrery without movement. T is a curved wood cradle for the sun and this helps to hold the instrument in place. T is a notice label on the interior of the box. The label reads "NOTICE / 1. To remove instrument, take out Screw from the bottom of the case, which holds it in place, and lift out. / The Trippensee Planetarium / (Patented) / The Trippensee MFG. CO. / Sole Manufacturers / Detroit Michigan." This is a beautiful all original Trippensee Planetarium. It is very rare to find an orrery of this period WITH its original carrying case and in such superb condition. It is a true treasure. A unique and beautiful antique instrument for the scholar or collector.
