RESTORED ANTIQUE HUMPBACK TRUNK DESCRIPTION; Metal with wood banding and elaborate hardware, a solid brass hasp and padlock. 27" tall, 30" across, and 18" from front to back. Weight; 80 lb..RESTORATING; Trunk was entirely covered with white paint when discovered.The damaged bottom was replaced with metal and wood. The wood was stained to match the pine banding.The metal sides of the trunk were stripped and painted with a glossy black enamel. The wood was stripped and sanded. All was protected with a coat of polyurethane. The solid brass hasp and lock were cleaned and returned to their original state. Since t was no key, a replaacement was custom made with a heart shaped finial.The decorative hardware was antiqued with black and silver paint.New leather handles were ordered and fitted into the hardware on the sides.The original rollers on the bottom were restored.The inside was repapered with a burgundy watermarked taffeta wallpaper.HE: It reminds me of an old pirate chest. Nothing but treasure would have needed such a substantial hasp and lock. I've never seen anything like it. The lock bears the date Sep 70, which must mean 1870, judging from the vintage of the trunk. The 1870's is a little late for pirates, but someone must have used this for something valuable.SHE: I think is was used by a pioneer girl whose father wanted her to feel secure, It would be a perfect hope chest. I can see a teenage girl who is preparing to someday have her own home, dreaming about a young woman over a century ago, packing her worldly belongings into this trunk as she sets off to make a new life on the western frontier.Besides its romantic appearance, this trunk's roomy, fresh-smelling interior makes it a practical storage piece for any home. A compartmented lift-out tray found inside the trunk has not been restored, but will be included in the sale.Thanks for looking;
