Antique Turkoman Chuval. Rare Example with Silk Highlights.
Turkmens,Turkomans are the majority population of current Turkmenistan ( Central Asia ), a land of Parthian Empire (Alexander the Great) and one of the Silk Route countries. Turkmens are recognized widely for their folk art. Predominant religion - Muslim Sunni. T are many Turkmen people currently living in Afghanistan and Iran. Although they have been exposed to and in few cases probably mixed with domestic cultures, main trends in clothing and customs remained the same.AK CHUVAL- white chuval, a type of chuval with horizontal bands of pattern in pile and flat woven bands of plain weave. Chuvals are the large bags served for keeping of household things, clothes. They also served for adornment of the yurta interior.
Extremely rare patterned Turkoman ak chuval. Middle- late of the 19c. Amazing colors from natural sources (orange color in the photo is due to camera effect, in life is it natural red). Wool, silk highlights, white color is cotton. Super meticulous hand work, over 300 knots per sq inch. Definitely will be a star any Oriental Rug Collection.Length-51", width 37".
