Antique Turkoman yamud wool Sumak Kilim Red rug 3-5x5-4 Circa 1930's, Very Soft and supple in Hands, Excellent Condition Origin of Soumak rugs Soumak rugs originate from the town of Shemakja and the rugs are made with a very tight and decorative weave. Many of the Soumak rugs are embroidered with silk and the decorative Soumak stitch is very old. This stitch has been discovered in material that dates as far back as 2000 BC. The Soumak stitch was found on ancient linen pieces found in Switzerland and other examples have also been found in Egypt, Peru, and Persia. Even primitive people from New Caledonia and Guiana have used this stitch. How Soumak rugs are embroidered?Normally, embroidered rugs are not created on a loom, but Soumak rugs are. They are woven on a vertical loom or on a makeshift vertical loom on which there are weights to hold down the wefts. No shuttle or bobbins are used and a needle is used on the loom to create the patterns seen in Soumak embroidery. All the materials use in the making of Soumak rugs is 100% natural. The rug is woven with wool and the embroidery is done with silk. All embroidery is cut off in the back, leaving 2-4 cm of thread or yarn hanging, and the pattern is only visible from one side. The weave is a flat weave and is tightly woven. Soumak rugs are woven with two wefts, one being the ground weft and the other known as the Soumak weft. It is the Soumak weft that crosses the warp in intervals and wraps around the warp in a manner that is similar to embroidery rather than weaving. In this way, the Soumak rug is unique even if the silk embroidery is not included. Once embroidered with silk, the rug is better as a decorative rug than a floor rug. When used as a floor rug, Soumak rugs are very durable and good for high-traffic areas. Please see my store items for more selections.
