This is one of the most fabulous watercolors I have ever seen! It is signed on the lower right Sidney T. Callowhill and below that it reads - after the picture in national gallery by JMW Turn. It is cut off right at the n in turn and IÃ,Â'm assuming it is referring to the renowned artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) British. Sidney Thomas Callowhill (1867-1939) was born in Worcester, England and came to America around 1885. He lived in Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore, MD, and finally Boston, MA, where he died in 1939. By profession he was an Illustrator, painter, designer, and porcelain and glass decorator. His work was exhibited in Soc. of Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1897, 1907, 1917, 1920-22, 1924-27; Lg. Mineral Painters, NYC, 1898; New York Soc. Arts & Crafts, 1925 (solo); National All. Art & Industry, traveling exhibition, 1932; JMW Gallery, 1997 (Objects from the Soc. of Arts & Crafts). He was a member of the Soc. Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1907-27. He was an Illustrator (original watercolors for some lithographed plates), Ferdinand Schuyler Mathews, Golden Flower Chrysanthemum (Boston: Louis Prang & Co., 1890). Son of James Callowhill -married to Vesta E. Callowhill. I canÃ,Â't say enough about the work in this watercolor Ã,Â- the detail and colors are fabulous! The artist used several different color hues in this piece everything from a light romantic purple to golden yellow and forest green. As I mentioned earlier the detail is also exceptional the sunset against the water is so very naturalistic giving off quite a pleasant overall ambience. The gondolas are also very well pronounced giving the viewer the sense that they themselves are in Venice. It is housed in an elegant gold gilt frame that complements the watercolor perfectly. Overall it measures 37 Ã,¾Ã,Â" x 29 Ã,¾Ã,Â" and the sight size is 29 Ã,½Ã,Â" x 21 3/8". The condition is very good Ã,Â- there is quite a bit of wear to the gold gilt on the frame but it in no way takes away from the painting and I feel it is to be expected. The watercolor does have some foxing on the top of the painting in the sky from the center to the left which I often notice occurs in watercolors where there is less color and of course due to its age. All in all a must see and quite the addition to anyoneÃ,Â's collection not to mention a person who appreciates finer things! The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC has quite a collection of Joseph Mallord William TurnerÃ,Â's work. There is one painting in particular entitled Venice: The Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore which is very similar to the watercolor done here by Callowhill which I feel just may be the painting this watercolor was after. Striving For Excellence It isnÃ,Â't brilliance or just getting the breaks, It is consistent attention to & honest respect for the Customer.
