Antique 19th Century Perfume/Scent Bottle w/Carrying Case *Free shipping for domestic bidders. International bidders see details. I bought this a few years ago from a lady who is an antique perfume bottle collector/dealer. It was rather expensive then, much to the dismay of my husband. It is absolutely beautiful and I really hate to give it up, but I am selling my entire collection of perfume/scent bottles to make room for my ever growing collection of angels. I am going to give the exact description that was given me at that time I bought it. I will include the description to the winning bidder. "Very rare early 19th century European (likely Dutch) smelling salts/scent bottle in hand painted papier mache scenic carrying case. This bottle is of fine crystal. It has a disc shape with an oval raised curved design. T is also a raised disc around the base of the neck. The stopper has a somewhat unusual shape with a deliberate bubble inside the glass as decoration. I ( she, and I as well ) have been afraid to attempt to remove the stopper because of the potential for damage to the bottle.
Size of the bottle: 2 1/2" H x 1 5/8" W. No flaws, damage or restoration. The bottle fits the case like a hand in a glove - absolutely perfect. The case is hand painted with a cabbage rose design on the front and back, with beautiful foliage. It also has a series of white lines on the top and base of the case. The scenic portion is hand painted with very fine detail and is then lacquered, as is the entire case, giving it a somewhat glossy finish. The scene is that of a barge with the following details: a gentleman, wearing a very large brim hat, astride his horse; a native, I ( she ) believe to be African, with a donkey, carrying large full bags (?contents?); 2 full bags on the deck of the barge; 2 additional natives, one with a pole to push the barge. T is a large tree in the foreground. Across the river stand small and large houses and a separate tall turret which could be a storage silo for grains. The scene, I ( she ) believe, represents the Dutch Boers in South Africa as they took over increasing areas of land from varied tribes to use the land to graze their cattle, destroying the environment. The case has historical significance and, tfore, is a very rare piece." The only additional information I can add is that the carrying case is a dark forest green with gorgeous several cabbage roses & their leaves. The case has a leather look & feel. In fact, I was amazed to find out it is papier mache. The central scene is slightly raised, almost like it was decoupaged on. I do know that decoupage was very popular back then so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out the scene was handpainted then decoupaged to the container. This piece is in superb condition & would be a wonderful gift for any perfume or scent bottle collector. A Little History of Perfume... Perfume making began in Europe in the 1300's & was used in most religious ceremonies. During the Renaissance, they were used mostly by the gentry to mask less than desireable personal and community sanitation practices. In the 1600's, perfume and hand wear were often combined as one. When royalty traveled away from their courts, they could simply lift gloved hand to nose to ward off unpleasant odors. France's King Louis XIV furtd the use of cologne by requiring his court members towear it everyday. He is remembered as the 'Perfume King'. W fragrances were once used as an indicator of status, today's colognes and perfumes project a certain image. Fragrances are worn to attract rather than to cover up unpleasant odors. They are used to represent fashion and the fame of the latest celebrity to bring out t own designer scent. I have tried to describe this item to the best of my ability and with the knowledge I possess. If you have additional questions and/or corrections about what I've described, I would be most appreciative & share your comments with all interested bidders.
