This auction is for a stunning pair of Victorian era garnet earrings. The long, dangling earring faces have almost no metal showing from the front...nothing but deep, burgundy color gems all having a brilliance and richness that seems lighted from within. These are the best of what is known as Bohemian garnets. For more than 600 years, the "Bohemia" or "Slovak" regions of Europe were the only known source for this type of pyrope garnet. The name garnet is believed to come from the Greek word for pomegranate, "granatum" and it certainly fits the juicy stones in these earrings! As with almost all of the Bohemian pieces, these garnets are rose cuts, or flat backed faceted top stones as well as large cabochon round and smaller cabochon pear shapes. It's amazing how much light flashes and glitters off the surfaces of the gems...coupled with the rich fiery color, earrings like these are highly coveted. The earring face is made in gilded silver and the new, vintage style ear wires made in solid 14k yellow gold.The earring faces measure a showy yet feminine 13.6mm at their widest and hang 2 and 1/8th inches long overall in the ear. They weigh 6.0 total grams or 3.0 grams each, light and comfortable for all day. For reference, a US dime measures 17.9mm in diameter and weighs 2.3 grams. They are in excellent, ready to wear condition. Overall, the earrings have a simple sophistication...all the more beautiful when you realize that they were made about 140 years ago! The 1860's were a time of austerity and ladies wore simple dresses (albeit with huge hooped skirts) and quite severe hair styles that usually covered the ears. As the 1870's came on, and the money of the new industrial revolution poured into the economy, styles became fancy and uber feminine with new fabrics, lace and bows. Ladies began to sweep their hair back from their ears and large dangling earrings were a must have. We've pictured a couple of lovely ladies of the era wearing their similar fancy earrings. We are professional jewelers with a eye tuned to see beauty...and we see it every where. Long time ebayers know us from the many, many pair of earrings we list and sell here; those that are upcycled and made from old cufflinks and Victorian buttons. Sometimes we find something that just needs a bit of TLC; that was the case here. After removing the remains of the old twisted ear wires, we replaced them with exact replicas made in solid 14k gold using our laser welder. The welder literally uses a laser beam to perfectly fuse the metals together; no sloppy solders or ruinous torch flame. We always use solid 14k so you have "good" gold for your ears...we don't want less, why would you? The Victorians knew what they were doing when it came to the ear wires...some of you modern gals have been nervous about wearing the shepherd hook wires but are always relieved the find that the catchers make them very secure. No more fumbling with (and losing!) little ear nuts...that, and the wires give the earrings a sassy, eye catching swing.
