MEAS. 1 7/8"L by 1 5/8"W weight .8oz gold surround I fully warrant/guarantee this cameo to be old, authentic, and true This cameo came from an extremely well-appointed estate auction. I know the owner treasured all her jewelry, and this family heirloom piece is no exception. I know very little about cameo carvings, so I am hoping someone with greater knowledge with recognize the high relief carving, portrait, either by form, settting, or image. Depicts a nobleman of some sort. Looks rather Elizabethan to me. Perhaps an actor or a court artist?...I think it looks much like Rembrandt, or a Musketeer. The detailing is exquisite. Extremely well-carved. Exceptionally vivid. His curly hair and of course, his high lace collar. Remarkable. High relief, protrudes from the setting. Perhaps this was used as a fob. Soft pastel tones range from pinks to ivory and muted peach. Certainly could use a very thorough cleaning which I have been afraid to do. I have not had the gold surround tested, but I ma certain it is gold. The mount is original to this piece and the clasp is secure. Using a loupe, t is one area of distress. I am not certain, but t appears to be the beginning of a crack which I have photographed(the magnified photo #4 with the arrow). Using a loupe, it is still very very difficult to see, but, trust me, t is a distress line. Just think this is an exceptional carving. Beautifully contoured. A bit rarer to find a carved cameo depicting a gentleman than one might suspect. This is a most striking piece. Elegant and beautifully rendered. A fine sculptured cameo.
