Antique *Empire Chest* This auction is for the really great old chest pictured and described below. This one has a great finish. It is built solid and sturdy. The drawers slide in and out nicely and it is clean all over. This is an early one with hand dovetail construction. This is a very nice chest measuring 41" tall, 42 1/2" wide and 23" deep. This is the front. This is a side view. This is the other side. This is the top. Sorry it is blurry. T is a thin split from shrinkage. This is what the drawers look like. Someone has painted them black inside and on the sides. They are very clean. You will learn more about the black paint below. This is a view of the hand dovetail construction. This is a close up of the legs. This is the back. This is what you see on the bottom of the top surface. If you remove the top drawers and look up inside at the underside of the top surface this is painted on it. My guess is that Norman refinished this piece in 1937 and painted the drawers and back black at that time.
