ANTIQUE 19th CENTURY VICTORIAN ENGRAVED COPPER JEWELRY BOX BY KNOWN FRENCH ENGRAVER, L.B.GRAV, TITLED "LE MESSAGE". on this very fine antique! Up for bids is a wonderful Antique Victorian Engraved Copper Jewelry Box from the 19th century! The lid and the sides of the box are covered with intricate and marvelous engravings by a known French engraver, L. B. Grav, while the inside of the box is lined with fine maroon velvet. The box presents an example of eclectic style- a mix of Baroque and Gothic influences. The side engravings portray mythical beasts and interwoven branches, while the masterfully engraved lid of the box depicts a beautiful and intimate scene of a messenger bringing news to an honorable lady and her maidens , perhaps an invitation or a love letter. The lid of the box is signed "L. B. Grav", and the engraving itself is based on a painting of Dap. A. Gelli, whose name is inscribed on the bottom left corner of the lid. The box has very nice, warm-toned patina. The hinges are in pretty good condition, as is the box itself, although it has some minor dings and imperfections and is a bit tarnished. Size: ~ 5 1/4 inches x 3 1/2 inches, Height: 2 1/4 inches. This is a very rare and fine item which is both a valuable addition to any collection as well as a wonderful gift!Enjoy!
