Victorian Period Italian Micro Mosaic Brooch Here we have for auction this stunning piece of 19th Century Micro Mosaic Jewellery - a lovely circular brooch with the most tiny, intricate glass tesserae making up the picture of flowers in the centre, surrounded by designs in reds and blues in a feathered Florentine style around the edge. Compared to later micro mosaic works, the quality and minute size of the glass mosaic pieces in this brooch show it to be a high quality, probably Italian piece that would have been highly prized by its owner. The tiles are beautifully hand set, with many of them around 1mm or less, and set into a gold tone filigree wire which spirals around the designs. As well as the flowers and feather designs, there are minute dark blue and white triangles, and the workmanship involved in making what is obviously 4 layers of glass (white centre surrounded by a blue line, a white line and another blue outer line) into a perfect triangle and slicing the glass into the tiles is mind boggling. Some of the miniscule daisies in the centre are cut in such a way that you can make out the petals. The whole brooch is smooth to the touch - you can feel the tiles, but they have been set so well than none of them feel rough or stick up above the line of the others, again, showing its quality.
