ANTIQUE VICTORIAN GRAND TOUR PINCHBECK CARVED LAVA CAMEO BROOCH c1870

An antique natural lava cameo; hand carved in very high relief to depict a classical bacchante, set in a pinchbeck-type gilt yellow metal mount with applied highlights, for wear as a brooch.

A very pretty cameo...collectable & very wearable too!

CONDITION : All original and generally good. Slight signs of gilding wear commensurate with age and use, some small areas of repair here & there. One applied orb missing to mount. Cameo a little loose in mount but perfectly secure, a few nicks to lava visible - see pics.

DATE/MARKS : Around 1870/80. Not marked.

DIMENSIONS : Mount 57 x 47 mm (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.

WEIGHT : Approx. 32.7 grams.
