An Antique Victorian MeatRotating Roasting Jack. Roasting Jacks were used in the 19th centuryand earlier to roast meat. It was more popular in France than This roasting jack has a wind up spring mechanism ( clockwork). The swinging bracket was mounted on the top of the fireplace, it has teeth that controls how far to place the meat close to the fire. The meat was placed on a string, which was then attached to the iron wheel via hooks & chains, then the wheel attached to the wind-up Jack. These kind of Jacks enabled people back then to cook their dinner without having to watch it cook. This kind of Jacks spins constantly and slowly, providing even heating to all sides. Roasting Jacks are rare. This Jack is complete, with the original winding key, hanging bracket and the iron wheel. It has two push/pull iron knobs. It appear to be in good condition, however I didn't use it, so it may need some cleaning or adjustment
