"God is our Refuge and Strength" is the motto of this original 1800's piece, worked in wool yarn on punched paper. This is in excellent overall condition, especially for its age! The yarn colors are exceptionally vibrant, in variegated shades of maroon, rose and pink, as well as variegated shades of dark to light brown. Delicate light green accents are entwined throughout the wording. The perforated paper background is in very good condition, with some very slight water marks on the right-hand side. T are no frayed or missing stitches. The frame is very elegant, and in wonderful, sturdy condition. I think it is probably cherry or walnut wood, with an inner frame of gold leaf. It measures 24-1/4" by 11-3/4" by 2" deep. The inside measurement is 20-3/8" by 8". You can see the heads of square nails holding the corners together, a sign of its age! The glass front is also original, showing the normal imperfections that come with old glass. It has no chips or cracks. The back is the original wood. I am selling this for my mother, who has collected mottos of this style for over 50 years, each with different sayings. After moving to an apartment, she is ready to find good homes for these increasingly rare examples of real American history. Having seen her entire collection, and having looked for these in shops and shows for years, I can say that this one is in really excellent condition. Please look for more mottos and other antiques that I will be listing in the coming weeks. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to submit them. I will get back to you ASAP.
