Antique Victorian Stained Glass Window from 1890- 1900
is a deliciously ornate stained glass transom window which was salvaged from one of Pittsburgh's old neighborhoods. This window is datable to 1890 - 1900, judging by the style of the window. The window is in its original solid wood sash or frame, which is painted grey on the interior side and primed white on the exterior side. The size of the total frame is 54 1/2" long x 20 7/8" tall. The window alone, (without the frame), is 50" long x 16.5" tall. The sash thickness is 1 5/16". This window is flat, and has two original iron reinforcement bars which are attached to the panel by means of twisted wires which are soldered to the leading. The window is designed in the American Romantic style; one of the many sytlistic permutations of the Victorian era. This style was at its height around 1880-1900, and at this time in Pittsburgh, the stained glass industry was flourishing, and furnishing almost every home with a few windows. The style is characterized by "swirling volutes, which are formed by groupings of multiple paisleys", which this window can certainly attest. This was a transom window, and probably sat atop a large picture window. The window is constructed with lead came soldered at the joints. The leading is strong, and all of the solder joints are intact. This spectacular design features a cream colored opalescent ripple fleur- de- lis at the center, surrounded by pinkish brown crackle. Crackle is a very special hand blown type of glass, whose texture is formed by dipping the molten glass ball into cold water, giving the glass surface a network of multiple tiny fissures. This shape is adorned by symmetrical swirling paisleys all around, all done in the same streaky gold ripple cathedral glass. The elaborate floral forms gracefully swirl their foliage hither and thither in multiple volutes. This is a rather baroque composition, with a lavish abundance of ornamentation. The background, or "field" is formed by a series of elongated gothic arch shapes done in clear gluechip glass, which are interspersed with small triangles of clear granite glass above and below. The outer perimeter border is a clear gluechip glass, the inner, wider perimeter border is done in clear crackle glass. This window has been professionally repaired. One piece of brown crackle was replaced with a piece of antique handblown glass in the same color. A few of the crackle border pieces were replaced with exact matches, and one piece of gold ripple was replaced with a near exact match. T are two super small hairline breaks which are stable, and barely noticeable. They are in the long narrow necks of the small gold paisley shapes, and so unobtrusive that you can hardly notice them unless you search for them. These are only mentioned for the sake of scrupulousness. Some solder joints have been resoldered, and the window has been partially regrouted, as needed. The frame is in good, sound condition, with all corners solid and intact; mortise and tenon construction. T are a few light gouges on the lower interior edge of the frame, w it was pried out; which can easily be patched. All said, this is a gorgeous and wonderful piece. The condition is excellent for a window of this age, and this window still has many good years left as the centerpiece in your home. It looks simply breathtaking in person. The window can be used as a real window installed directly into the architecture or simply as a decorative window hung in front of an existing window. This window epitomizes the Victorian style in all of its ornate extravagance. This window is priced at a wholesale level, making it a good deal for all bidders. Buyer will pay the actual charges for ground shipping plus a crating fee of $40. to pay for the materials needed to pack and crate this large window. The window is heavy and will be packed in thick styrofoam sheeting, (large) bubble wrapped in 2 layers, and custom crated in plywood. Insurance for the total amount of the sale will be included in the shipping fig...
