We are delighted to offer you this stunning old antique sterling silver and genuine butterfly wings brooch, from the late 1800's - early 1900's! Pieces such as this were made from the wings of the beautiful blue Morpho butterfly, who inhabits the jungles of South America. They were especially popular among the Victorian social set, and the popularity continued through the 1900's. until their manufacture was banned in the 1950's ! Thank heavens, or the poor blue Morpho butterfly would most likely be extinct by now! ( If you saw the movie 'Papillon', starring Dustin Hoffman, you might recall a scene when the prisoners of the Nazis, entrenched in the humid jungles of south America, were made to catch butterflies, to be sold to collectors for '20' each? These were the ones they were after! ) Most of them are designed into tropical sunset scenes, but ours is simply a cobalt expanse of shimmering luminous beauty. The wings are protected by a thick domed glass ( not plastic or lucite) cover, and the edges of the silver setting are embossed in an ornate design. The brooch measures 1 5/16" long and is 1 1/16" wide. Its depth is 1/4", not including the old fashioned 'c' clasp and extended pin back. The back is marked ' Zitrin RIO Brazil'. ( These were made also as souvenirs for the visitors from abroad. ) The brooch weighs 7.6 grams, and is in very good condition, considering its age! T are no chips, cracks or scratches to the glass dome cover, and the beautiful wings are bright, blue and intact. The silver setting has developed a rich patina after a century of time, but that can be cleaned right up if you desire. This is a well made, quality wearable piece of history that will be a cherished family heirloom, that your descendants will thank you for, long after you are ashes! Thank you for your interest! :) p.s. the flash element on my camera is responsible for the white glare reflecting off the glass cover in the photos... that is not really t! )
