Rare Antique 10K Gold Mourning Swivel Brooch c.1840with Table-worked Plaited Brown Hair and Daguerreotype This large brooch/Pendant is breathtaking. It is a rare and unique daguerreotype c1840 of a fine bearded gentleman mounted under beveled rock crystal on one side and tightly woven plaited (braided) brown hair under crystal on the other side. The hair likely belonged to the the gentleman in the photograph. The brooch swivels so that it can be worn either side facing up. The elaborate hand-etched gold mount with etched applied wing details tests to 10K Gold. In very fine condition overall, with some silver halide crazing on the daguerreotype which gives the piece a bit of character, in my opinion. Has its original hinge and c-clasp with replacement steel pin stem. Also has a ring (not gold) so that it can be worn as a pendant. It is large measuring 2" (long) x 2" (wide). The beveled crystal on both sides is in lovely shape with just a tiny nick at 4:00 on the braided side; not very distracting. NO RESERVE AUCTION !
