DESCRIPTION MLN 413 / Antique High Back American Oak Bed, 1 of 3 PC Set ~ 's a magnificent high back American oak bed, a Victorian beauty replete with Eastlake-style carving. It's a towering beauty, one of those grand show-stopping beds that will enchant all who see it. The construction is deeply paneled and elegant in its simplicity. It has just the right amount of carved detail, which is matched by the dresser and nightstand/washstand, shown last photo, but available in our other auctions this week. Purchase of the set would reduce shipping to most locales. Just ask to be certain. The laddered headboard of this fine old treasure rises to a crown of carved flourishes. The framework is graceful and keeps this large piece from looking cumbersome and heavy. That's quite an accomplishment, actually, because these high back Victorian beauties are some of the largest beds made. Can't you just see this stunner piled high with featherbeds, layers of antique linens, grand down pillows with lacy cases? A colorful quilt thrown over the end is all that's needed to turn this into a nighttime retreat to restore even those who live the most harried lives. This kind of furniture could be found in just about every farmhouse across the country from the 1880s to the 1930s. After that, it seems, most farmers consigned their grand oak furniture to the silo or the barn, furnishing their homes from that point with the American mahogany furniture of the '30s and '40s, itself now a classic and much sought after. This bed and its matching pieces are fresh from a Missouri estate. They've been so well cared for, it's amazing. This set never hit a silo, the farmer's friend for old furniture storage (if you've never taken a trip through the Kansas and Oklahoma countryside, you have no idea what can be found in farmers' outbuildings). Ready for use, this bed has its original rails, which are in themselves quite stylish with their upturned ends. It's a divine bed and it can be modified to queen with the purchase of a set of antique bed converter rails, either on the internet, or available through our shop. Converter rails are metal rails that are attached to the bed, lengthening the rails and allowing for the placement of the wider queensize mattress. We have complete instructions we send with each bed shipment so you can accomplish the transformation yourself. You can search for "antique bed converter rails" on the internet to get an idea of what we're talking about. T are a number of methods of accomplishing the modification, but our in-house fitting of rails and shipping runs $150. If you wish to use the wooden rails, this can be done as well by any reasonably competent carpenter, and we have instructions he or she can follow. Enough about the details of conversion, back to this exquisite treasure. We estimate its age at 1890-1910. It's a beautiful piece of furniture in wonderful condition with no concerns noted. Ready for use just as it is, or make it a queen if you wish. These are increasingly difficult to find these days ~ especially in oak ~ and in this condition, almost impossible.
