Offered is a wonderful and very old eagle lamp cast in the base bottom AR FRANCE. The AR is both above and below the word FRANCE. I have been unable to find anything like this lamp but was able to find a few websites offering antique sculptures with the same described marks. ( no pictures of the marks were found on these sites ) These sites inform that the AR stands for the Arthur ( or Artur ) Rubenstein Foundry of Vienna Austria and such marked items and likely a commissioned work. In this case France or a French artist. If it helps, the numbers 70041146 are also scratched into the base. A magnet is not attracted to any of the metal. I see a few spots of copper color on the Eagle, the shade, and upper portion of leaf on the column peeking through the gold leaf or gilt . . and I believe the lamp, at least in part, to be bronze. May be a mixture of various metals, I'm not an expert. This is a very ornate lamp with the bold looking spread Eagle with outstretched neck holding the shade in his strong beak. The shade holds 6 emerald green glass medallions. I removed one and found the edges of the glass to be perfectly smooth as if from a poured mold and not cut out. The socket is marked Pat October 31, 1905 Gen Elec Co USA 3 amp 250 volts. The inner threaded sleeve of the socket reads 660 watt 250 volts, leading me to believe it may have been changed sometime in the past to accomodate lighting of the time. The socket also has a threaded cap piece. Unusual, at least to me. Furthurmore, the socket may not be original as , I believe, these old lamps usually had a pull - chain type. So... this light may actually be older thank 1905. Just a guess on my part. You experts will know.It also appears the wiring is original from the shade to the bottom of the base. At some point , the base was cut to accomodate a switch and the switch on top of the base and wiring hole and silk cord with a bakelite plug were added at that time. See photos. The shade is approximately 8" in diameter and has gold fringe. I do not know if the fringe is original. T is a dent ( not bad but needs to be mentioned ) on one side of the shade. T are also 2 small splits in metal of underside edge near fringe . ( also not distracting ) Height to top of wing is 21 1/8". The base is 6 1/2" in diameter. T is some wear, of course, to the gold finish as one might expect. I have provided plenty of pictures but ,if I've missed something, please, don't hesitate to ask a question. I'm not a photographer and I have surely not done justice to this lamp. It is much more detailed and intricate of design than I have been able to capture.Offered with NO RESERVE ! 5 day auction ends Friday night. don't miss out !P.S... please take a peek at my other items, won't you ?Weight and box size are estimated.
