RARE Double Sided Axe -- Found in Oxford UK
This is a highly decorated piece. The entire shaft (handle) and axe-blades are forged steel and clearly made by a talented blacksmith. The entire piece is 21 inches in length and 6 1/2 inches across the duel axe blades. It is perfectly balanced. The edges of the axe blades and haft (spike) are still somewhat sharp. This does not look like a reproduction. Carved within the shaft on either side are a coat of arms with a crown above, Also on the shaft are three fleur de lies and some type of vine with leaves. At the bottom of the shaft is a twisting pattern and then ends with ominous "Viking-like" image of a man with a long-mustache and face carved within the handle at the very bottom on both sides There looks as if there is a ship (Viking?) and a clear image of a crescent moon and a worn outline of a sun in the space below the haft and between the twin axes. I’m a lecturer at the U. Oxford in England and found this gem at one of my ‘hunts’ at an estate sale. I’ve never seen anything like it. I personally purchased this item a because I was utterly intrigued by the obviously hand-forged face carvings, intricate acanthus and other heraldry. This is one stunning piece! I’ve visiting many museums but have never, ever, seen anything like this! This is a genuine antique, GUARANTEED! I use to display this in my home, but I’m afraid that my other academic colleagues where less intrigued and more unsettled by someone, like me, who by all appearances *seems* rather innocuous, yet displays this battleax in the middle of their house --- displaying it my bedroom didn't help my image either. It is for this reason ONLY that I offer this item for sale. I really love it and hope you will too. I will only accept PayPal and will only sell to a U.S. address.
