This is an Antique Villeroy & Boch Mettlach Beer Coaster. On the back it says "Villeroy & Boch - Mettlach - 1032 Geschutzt". T are also some embedded numbers and letters on the back - some of them are a bit hard to read but I think it says "144- 22 - SO(?)". On the front t is a German phrase - the first two words I could not figure, but maybe you know "(Trent such?) des Lebens, weil noch das Lampchen gluht". I bought this at an antique store with a tag that said it was a beer coaster and it dated between 1874-1909. I bought it because I liked the fact one guy (gnome? elf?) is drinking beer and the other guy is playing a lute/mandolin instrument. Although I am not an expert on Villeroy & Boch or Mettlach, I would say that the beer coaster is in pretty good antique condition. It has some patina and some film. Around the edge near the bottom t some grey surface abrasions (dirt?) and minor off white spots and faint lines of wear from being handled. T are some grey patches and some minor patches of glaze crackling on the top especially near the men's legs. But the grey patches look like embedded dirt and maybe with some gentle cleaning it can be removed. T are some flaws around the bottom edge rim and the coaster as a whole that I would consider typical due to the nature of the ceramic such as small pot marks, slight variations in color due to application of paint, etc. T is also some typical scuffs around the bottom rim. Overall very nice, striking and still very useable (if you are not too picky about the flaws). I think the flaws give the coaster nice age and character. The beer coaster measures about 4 7/8" in diameter(please see dime on top left side for scale). It also has some height/thickness - 5/8". Some of the lights, and reflections that you see are just in the photo and not on the coaster itself. Photos may not show all flaws mentioned. I tried my best to describe in detail this coaster, but might have not covered everything imaginable.
