From a local collector's estate, this auction is for an African-American folk-art quilt. Take a look! Age: 1950s-era Pattern: Stacked Hex -- Running Hex pattern -- each hexagon holds three diamond-shaped designs -- POWERFUL, POTENT graphics in this one -- absolutely qualifies as a "hex" quilt, an old folklore legend that those who sleep under "hex" quilts at night are protected from evil -- note lots of RED used in the hexagons, which was believed to protect the home and ward off evil spirits and wandering souls -- this quilt displays SPECTACULAR visuals and GORGEOUS, BOLD colors against a creamy background -- QUIRKY and COMPELLING -- a SPIRITED quilt that will work perfectly for the holiday season, and be the centerpiece for some interesting conversations -- all the "personality" you could ask for -- and a superb example of African-American FOLK-ART! Fabrics: All old 100% cottons -- many 40s and 50s-era nice-quality shirting and dress fabrics, and a few earlier FEEDSACKS -- memories abound -- someone's old party dress, another's church attire -- nothing was wasted -- obviously a make-do/utility quilt that was constructed of old family clothing remnants, and ART was born at the same time -- the result is an old BEAUTY that is pulsing with life, and absolutely VIVACIOUS -- banded and backed in and old green print cotton -- straight edges. Batting: Light to medium-weight batting which feels like an early nice-quality cotton/poly blend. Handwork: Totally hand-pieced and hand-quilted in a diamond/grid pattern following the design of the quilt at 4-5 stitches per inch -- handwork is a little on the primitive side in this one, but completely WORKS with its quirky personality. Size: 68" x 80" Condition: Absolutely excellent MINT condition -- clean as a whistle, strong and sturdy -- no wear or usage is apparent -- this one was so NICE when they got it completed, that they didn't have the heart to use it -- was obviously stored correctly for many, many years -- never saw the light of day -- colors crisp and vibrant -- everything intact -- edges in great shape -- batting in perfect shape -- no injuries or soil issues -- maybe just a couple tiny faint-colored age spots -- really nothing worth reporting -- doesn't get much better than this -- absolutely no apologies -- has exceptional display value, as you can see in the pics -- MINT condition FOLK-ART -- you'll burn of lots of gas finding a piece this NICE -- all this old BEAUTY needs is a new home -- certain to become a family favorite and an AWESO... read more
