Up for auction is this beautiful vintage violin which I recently purchased for your consideration...any assistance on age and/or maker would be appreciated, as always. I don't profess to be a violin expert, but have sold a handful over the past year or so (viewable in my recent feedback). Please let me know if you require additional photos or information. I'm limited to twelve photos in the auction, but will be happy to send larger photos to you via email. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Lower bout: 8 1/8" (20.6cm)...Upper Bout: 6 1/2" (16.5cm)...Back, from end to w it meets button: 14" (35.6cm)...Overall length: 23" (58.4cm)...Ribs: 1 3/16" (30mm) The original finish is quite dark, with a gorgeous aged patina and distressing that you must see in person to appreciate. The three photos with the black backgrounds make the finish appear much lighter than it truly is. I did this to lighten the exposure, so you could see the details better. All the photos with white backgrounds show the accurate hue of the wood and finish. The violin is unmarked, with no label...and again, has a beautiful distressed patination which only comes with age. The top is spruce. The rest is flamed maple. I see no open or closed cracks or edges on the top/table...nor are t any evident on the 2-piece back. The top/table has a small chip at the bass-side edge adjacent to the shoulder...but it only comprises the top half of the wood. The outer piece of purfling is also missing at this location. Looking inside the body through the tailgut-button hole, I see a series of seven (7) fabulous, carved cleats installed at perfect intervals along the entire length of the back seam. They're pyramid shaped and appear to be hand carved. My first impression is that these may be original cleats to provide extra support? They look quite old. This violin may, or may not, require repair...I'm unsure. The only area in question is the bottom end rib on the bass side...as I've shown in the photo. The lower portion is flush with the edge of the back, over a small distance. The table edge at the same point is OK. However, t's no looseness to the rib. And it appears to be closed...I viewed the area through the f-holes while having the bottom end up to a 100-watt light bulb and saw no light coming into the body. If this is not an issue, then I see no reason why this fiddle couldn't be set up and played as-is...and it just feels & looks like it has terrific sound.I see no cracks on the pegbox or scroll. Neck and ebony fingerboard are square, and the neck and shoulder are tight with no looseness. The forward portion of fingerboard is carved on the underside, as I've attempted to illustrate in the photos, and it has no cracks, chips, or repairs. Beautiful inlaid purfling is fully intact, besides the small piece previously mentioned, adjacent to the shoulder. The purfling point on the bass-side upper beak/corner is not damaged, thankfully. Bass bar is intact. Sound post is set in place. Interior has full upper & lower lining with 4 corner blocks visible. Top and bottom blocks intact. I found this violin with only two broken gut or sinew strings, spooled on the two fantastic pegs that are shown. Each has the inlaid MOP design on both sides. No tailpiece or chinrest were found with this. I recently bought a used Glaesel hardcase, in excellent condition, so it's included in this auction in order that the violin be well protected during shipping...since I sense something special about this instrument. Please let me know if you require additional information or photographs.Local pick-up is always free & welcomed in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, and I'm flexible on days/times. Professional packaging AND insured shipping to the continental United States will be $28. Alaska, Hawaii, and International bidders please contact me for a quote. Why Buy New? The Fine Print...Please Read I'm very serious about grading my pieces, as you co...
