I'm not sure if this sword is American, but that is my best guess. I've owned 4 different American eagle head pommel swords that all had this same style of German mde blade. I've seen hilts with the forward facing pommel on swords of many nations. But never one with an actual human face on the pommel. Very interesting. The quillon is a lions face. There is an angel on the knuckle-bow, and 2 angels on the counter guard. The angel on the right is holding an anchor. This gueretees that the sword is navl. I think the face in the center of the guard must be that of Poseidon, the Greek God of the sea. We can speculate all day. But I think maybe the combination of naval items and angels could meen that this sword was made for a naval surgeon. The grip is of checked wood. The engravin, and traces of the gold gilding is still present on the blade. Blade has only a few minor nicks. Oveerall the sword is in quite good condition. 37" long with a 31 3/4" blade. Payment is due within 3 days from the end of the auction. I entered a high international shipping cost. Email mer for actual cost.
