EXQUISITE! This beautiful English silver wine caddy is a piece that belonged to my great-grandmother. It bares her initials "RA". From my research of the marks on the piece, I believe it was made either in 1900 or 1927 in Birmingham, England by Nathaniel Smith & Co. which was a division of Sheffield. I tried to capture this in a picture but was not very successful. They include the letters NS indicating Nathaniel Smith & Co. (the information I found on this was not all that clear) in a small square followed by and anchor (for Birmingham, England) followed by a lion (for England) and lastly a "C" in a box with a wavy bottom. Depending on the type of the "C", which is not clear to me, it could mean either 1900 or 1927. In addition to the stamps which are on the upper rim of the holder, on the bottom rim of the dish is stamped "Ro498761". The detail on the wine caddy is amazing! It is very ornate with a stamped design of floral garlands, drapes, bows and fluting on the handle and the bottom edge. The handle is movable and has adjustment screws on the bottom to keep the handle upright when using it. The piece looks as though it is essentially two pieces of silver. The middle was made by taking flat pieces of silver and embossing it with the designs from the back side and then soldering it into a circle and later soldering it onto the circular base which forms a drip-catching base. The handle is attached by two round brackets on either side which have been soldered into place. Given the age and nature of manufacture of this wine caddy, t are some slight dents and it is not perfectly round. It is, however, most beautiful and very servicable.
