This is a gorgeous mechanical pencil. It is in very good condition. The pencil casing is a beautiful yellow gold and covered with delicate scrollwork in the shapes of leaves and petals. The pencil slide is an open double leaf shape with an inset ruby colored stone in its center. The slide moves easily. The top section removes by turning, the top containing a clean alabaster seal with the initials "NB" in gothic letters. The pencil comes in a hinged antique case which is a rich, dark brown leather over a thin wood with decorative tooling and leaf-shapes in gold leaf embossed on each end on the lid and a gold leaf line around the edge. The case was held closed by a pair of hook and eyes. Unfortunately one of the eyes is missing but both hooks are still attached to the box. Inside the case the pencil nests in a soft gray velvet fitted to the shape of the pencil. The inside of the lid is a light gray linen. As for the history of the item, I have reason to believe it may have come from France but I can't say for certain. It belonged to a friend of my mother's (who I think was from France). He gave it to her and then it was given to me since my mother's passing. I have kept it in it's box and have not used it. As far as I know it would take a standard lead but I can't imagine using it. It's a lovely collectible writing instrument. For read more
