He purchased his own shop to manufacture small items and made jewelry until 1831. When Gorham's son, John, joined the firm in 1841, the name was changed to Jabez Gorham & Sons. John Gorham quickly recognized the advantages of machinery, and as a result the Gorham Company was among the first to introduce factory methods to augment hand craftsmanship in production of silverware. Throughout the 19th century various mergers took place and fast forward to 1929 when the Gorham retail store at 5th Avenue and 47th St NY city merged with Black Starr and Frost under the new firm name of Black, Starr and Frost-Gorham Inc. In 1962 The Gorham Company sold its interest and the name became Black, Starr & Frost, Ltd. The Gorham Company was sold to Textron, Inc. in 1967, and in 1989 was again sold, this time to Dansk International Designs. At all periods the Gorham Company has been noted for the fine quality of its die work as well as superior design and fine finishing of all products.
