WOW FACTOR !!! This incredible shawl is my last one, and the best of any I have seen, by far . Dramatically different, featuring bold 1/2 " wide stripes throughout, and very symetrically bordered with multiple abstracted pyramid , tree, and diamond sun patterns , seven on each end. The designs have much beauty and presence. These Art Deco period shawls date to the 1920's , after the discovery of King Tut's tomb led to a craze for "all things Egyptian" . Vintage pieces of this quality are soft to the hand, made of sturdy, long fiber Egyptian cotton, with thin nickelsilver washed copper strips threaded through , knotted, cut ,and pounded into the geometric designs. Remarkably, these are still shiny some 90 years later ! The face of this shawl is absolutely breathtaking, and the drape is wonderful . Weighing in at almost 2 pounds (1 lb,13 oz.), it has much of the feel of the more solidly covered shawls, but in my opinion, is actually more wearable. The dimensions are 97 cm. x 223 cm. ( 38 " x 88 " , or approximately 1 yard x 2.5 yards ) Photo # 5 shows a few areas on the reverse face where the silver wash is thinner, and shows some copper patina . This is normal for the age and is not considered a defect. Also of note are two original repairs shown in photos # 6 & # 7, which are expertly done , are 1/2 " long each, and seem to have been done at the time of the making ; they read like slubs in the natural cotton netting and are barely noticeable except upon close inspection . Not noticeable at all against black. Speaking of color, the net has aged to a fine shade of , well, hmmm...it is somewhat illusive of description. During the day , depending on the light, it appears either a handsome charcoal gray or a plum tone, as can be seen against the black background in photo # 2 . At night, or in low light, it reads as a soft espresso , and can even disappear entirely against black, creating a floating shimmering sheath of silvery striped mystery . Need I add that this piece seems to have a life of it's own ? Immediately wearable, as all the hand-rolled hems are fully intact, and it has been freshly laundered before sale. Complete hand washing instructions will be included in the package. The piece has been carefully stored , rolled in organic cotton, and laundered every few years as instructed. Purchased from a collector in San Francisco in 1981. I can accept PayPal only at this time ; I will contact you at the end of auction .
