Hi! This is a rare piece! I purchased it at a local estate sale, and after a LOT of research, determinied that this is an antique/ vintage wood block, made in India. Since the 12th century, India has used hand carved wood blocks to print intricate designs on its fabrics...a process so well received, their fabrics received royal patronage. Although I can not determine exact origin, this is MOST likely one made by Indian craftsmen. The most common area using wood blocks was Gujarat. Items made with this process were wall hangings, canopies and floor covers. Colors typically used: Red, for love...Yellow, for spring, Blue, as in Krishna, and saffron of the yogi. These blocks were made of seasoned, very hard teak wood, by craftsment. The underside has the design intricately cut on it, the top has a wood handle. These blocks were also called caps and tjaps. Size: 5 1/2 inches long, 2 inches wide, 2 3/4 inches high (including handle) T is a 3/4 inch metal plate nailed to one side, which maintains the integrity of the straight line border.
