Vintage Keuffel & Esser Forestry Compass ( New York ) Condition: Excellent in original box Specifications: Material: Black crinkle painted alloy Size: 3 1/4" x 3" x 11/16" (closed) Crystal: glass Needle: Jeweled, adjustable, compensated for Northern Hemisp, etched arrow for North Declination adjustable Graduations: Degrees, per 10 Weight: 6.3 oz. Neck Cord Stop: Automatic when cover is closed. Markings: Keuffel & Esser Co., New York The Keuffel & Esser Co. was established in 1867. The K&E factory was in Hoboken , NY . Keuffel & Esser compasses are the best American made compasses of their era. âeoeForestryâe or "Cruiser" compasses get their name from the task of cruising a stand of lumber to estimate its value. These compasses are noted for having their numbering system and cardinal points "backwards," i.e. you will find the mark for East on the 9:00 position on the compass dial. The concept is as follows - you rotate the compass and thus place the tip of the needle on the bearing you wish to follow - the compass' sight line will then be pointing in that precise direction.
