Antique Maple Butcher's Block, c.1880's We purchased this beautiful old butcher's block at an estate auction in State College, Pennsylvania from a couple who had collected antiques their whole life, Unfortunately, death and illness forced them to sell their entire collection. Their son told us this butcher's block was built in the 1880's and used in a stage coach house in Centre County, Pennsylvania. This thing is massive!!! It stands 31" high, and easily weighs over 200 pounds as it took for of us to move it. The top is 10" thick, 30" wide and 40" long. I am a woodworker, so it is my educated guess that the top is constructed of 2" thick hard maple glued together. I cannot determine what the legs are made of as they are painted. T are 5 bolts that run through the block, evidently to help hold the block together in case the glue failed. T is a crack on one side (and only one side) as shown in the photo, but it does not appear to be affecting its structural integrity. The top has been well aged and the natural finish, knife marks and butchers wax have given it a wonderful patina. The legs are painted red that has faded and are remarkably sturdy when considering how heavy this piece is. Like many old pieces, the top shows the wear from over 120 years of use. You can actually see waves, or unevenness in the top, showing w most of the cutting and scraping took place. Although t are years of grease and butcher's wax embedded in the top, it appears fairly clean with no noticeable odors. Due to the weight of this piece, it is available for local pickup (bring 3 strong people with you), or I will deliver within 150 miles of State College, PA, for a delivery fee of $0.65 per mile, one way. In other words, if you live 100 miles away, the delivery fee would be $65.00. You will need 4 strong people at your end to remove the butcher block. I do not do that. Payment for the butcher block and delivery fee will be expected before delivery.
